Puffin Web Browser Review: a Great Concept with Room for Improvement in Practice
Browsing the Web has already become second nature to most of us. Naturally, it is no longer something that can only be done on a desktop computer at home. Having a smartphone (and in some cases even a mobile phone) in your pocket means that you access the Internet virtually any time you wish.
Web browsing experience on mobile devices has improved drastically over the last decade, and today there are lots of browsers available for devices running both on iOS and Android. Some of them could blow your mind away with flawless performance, while others are — well, not so good. Is Puffin Web Browser a solid player on the mobile browser market or yet another failed attempt to take Play Market and App Store by storm? Read on our Puffin Web Browser review to find out.
Puffin Web Browser has definitely got a lot of functions; there's no denying that. The first time you download Puffin app, install and run it, you’ll go through a simple setup procedure where you’ll have to choose whether you prefer to see a desktop or mobile version of websites you visit. While both modes seem to work seamlessly, you might be better off with the mobile-friendly rendition, especially if your phone has a smaller screen.
After you’ve made your choice, you’ll be taken to the homepage. The homepage has five tabs, the first one being the search box, your most visited websites, and some news updates. You can edit the most visited websites and change their layout, but you can't turn off the news updates or change their provider, which is clearly a downside. From the homepage, you can either go on to type something into the box and actually browse the Web or open a number of tabs which include Bookmarks, Browsing History, Downloads and Settings. Basically, that’s everything you need, conveniently presented and easily accessible straight from the homepage.
Puffin Web Browser has a dedicated proprietary technology to compress the web pages and files you view online, thus saving you traffic. The developers claim that their data compression algorithm can save up to 90% of traffic. While these claims may be overrated, Puffin does seem to be less eager to eat up all of your mobile data traffic than most other mobile browsers. In addition, you can customize the use of this technology on your particular device by choosing whether it should be applied all the time, or only when you’re using a mobile data connection. What’s more, you can also tweak the amount of compression for images (from fairly low resolution to the original resolution), as well as flash apps and games. Yes, you can play online games straight from Puffin browser thanks to the Adobe-Flash-Over-the-Cloud-24/7 technology. The technology is constantly being improved and updated, so you can count on always having a smooth online gaming experience with Puffin. The majority of games and apps run without any problems or lags, and, provided that you have a Bluetooth keyboard or a dedicated game controller, it’ll feel almost as if you were playing on your laptop or PC. Those who don't have any physical controllers for their mobile devices will be pleased to find that a virtual Trackpad (basically, a computer mouse simulator) and a virtual Gamepad are built into the Puffin free app, making browsing and gaming an even better experience.
Another distinct feature of Puffin Web Browser is the fact that it uses its servers to process heavy, graphics-loaded web pages. This means that if your device is an old or budget one, it no longer has to do all the processing on its own and take ages to load a page with a couple images or animations. The possibility to make an external computer do all the work really makes Puffin Web Browser stand out from other mobile browsers. It also makes Puffin one of the best options for browsing the Web on a low-spec device.
Finally, Puffin developers have also given some thought to protecting your online identity from tracking bots and scammers. The browser uses a modern encryption technology to make sure that your personal information remains hidden from anyone who shouldn't have access to it. It is safe to use public access Wi-Fi with Puffin free app, while most other browsers don't protect you from being tracked and possibly hacked when using an open Wi-Fi network. If you want your device to be free of your web browsing history, simply turn on the Private mode and do whatever you want without leaving a trace on your device.
Puffin Web Browser has a minimalistic design which mostly utilizes white and gray colors. It is quite aesthetically pleasing and unobtrusive, so no interface elements are going to distract you while you use Puffin. Overall, the design strongly reminds of Google Chrome Browser interface, and while it is perfectly usable and visually attractive, some users may find that it lacks individuality.
Puffin Web Browser sure does offer a lot of functions, but sometimes they don't work the way they’re supposed to. The app itself is stable and free of lags or crashes, but your browsing experience might be interrupted by “No network” status messages even when you’re using a strong secure Wi-Fi connection. In addition, sometimes interface elements don't blend out when you go into full-screen mode to watch a video or play a game. These are only minor drawbacks, but it still would've been nice to see them fixed.
Cross-Platform Use 4/5
You can download and install Puffin for iOS and Android mobile devices. Since it is a mobile browser, it doesn't necessarily have to be present on desktop computers, but a Windows Phone/Mobile, as well as a Windows 10 version, would've been quite welcome.
Puffin Web Browser is a free app, but it is ad-supported. The ad-free version will cost you $4.99. Use our "Get app" button to find where to download Puffin Web Browser.
Puffin Web Browser has definitely got a potential to become a great mobile browser, as long as the developers acknowledge some errors and fix them in the next updates. If you enjoy playing flash games, Puffin app is just what you need because you get full Adobe Flash technology support without having to pay a cent.Collapse
While Puffin Web Browser lacks whatever it takes to become a globally popular mobile browser, it certainly deserves your attention if you’re looking for a fast modern browser that offers Adobe Flash support, as well as some additional perks.
