For the parents’ delight, Google created a kid-friendly version of the YouTube and named it not differing - YouTube Kids. It’s a bright and kids-friendly app which is completely free and available in the Google Play market and Apple iTunes store. It doesn’t have a usual sidebar or popup ads and shows only age-appropriate videos for kids aged 4 and up.
YouTube Kids has a ton of kid-friendly content and most important doesn’t allow kids to create adult accounts and watch gaming with the dirty expletives or booty shake videos or upload their own which is even more frightening.
There are special settings for adults in the app, so you can control what will be available to your children and what will they see.
This app allows parents to disable a search function, so your kid will be able to watch videos only on the main screen. You can also customize a home screen by age range: Preschool, School Age or all Kids.
If you don’t find essential to turn off the search function, then your children can type or pronounce with a voice command whatever they want to find. It helps even the little ones who can’t yet read or write to search for videos. All YouTube Kids archives have been filtered to remove anything that isn’t family-friendly, so even if you haven’t set a parental control, the app will still show safe content to your kids.
In the case you want to limit your kids from watching particular channels that are already offered inside the app, you can block them or a certain video. To do so, you need to connect the YouTube Kids app with your Google account just once when you attempt to block a video at the first time.
One more feature of this app is the lack of a sign-in or sign-up option. So your kids won’t give any information to the app, register an account or anything like that. Kids can open the app and start watching it right away.
There are also no comments underneath the videos. So your child won’t read or see something inappropriate. Also, no ratings are available in this app.
YouTube Kids has a great feature for the parental control - a timer. You can limit the time of the application work. Two minutes before the watching ends, your kid will get a friendly notification, and when the time is over, the app will turn off and show a fun sleepy character to your child.
YouTube Kids has simple and familiar to anybody interface. It doesn't take much for kids to navigate through all of the videos in the app.
The app’s interface is divided into five categories: Recommended, Shows, Music, Learning and Explore. In the category “Shows” you‘ll find series from well-known children's channels. In the “Music” all songs range from baby lullabies to classic or popular children's hits. The “Learning” section consists of roughly three dozen educational channels. The “Explore” part has some user-uploaded videos about things like cooking, drawing, playing with pets as well as videos from branded channels with some kids commercials.
Each item in a category is a filled with videos channel. If you continue scrolling through the channels, you will flip from one category to the next, so you don't actually need to tap on a category.
The size of the interface buttons is increased to simplify a managing process for kids; a scroll is also easy, and kids can go to full-screen mode with a single touch.
The app’s ability to search videos by voice is extremely helpful for younger kids who can’t spell by themselves what they want to watch.
The app’s option of parental control to take away search is perfect for those parents who have strict limits for their kids.
Busy or irritable parents can use another option of YouTube Kids and turn off any background music and sound effects so that it won’t disturb them from work.
Until recently the app had a small gap: kids were able to enter the parental control area, if they could read, of course. But for now, parents can set a custom passcode that the kid won’t know. This function is excellent for the parents with older kids or young math geniuses.
Also, YouTube Kids tracks what does your child prefer to watch and recommend new videos based on the kid's interests. So, once they are done with the first video, the next one starts playing automatically.
Cross-platform use 4/5
YouTube Kids is an app, not a website. So you should go for it if you have Apple or Android devices. It’s also perfect for those families who have a Smart TV or a game console because any video from the app is available to watch on the big screen.
YouTube Kids is a free app because of the present advertising there, which is filtered, age-appropriate and targeted at children.
YouTube Kids offers not only entertainment, but there are also plenty of educational videos available. It doesn’t have a lot of bugs and lags; it’s also quite polished. Therefore, this is definitely a must-have app for all parents.
If you have a child who knows what is YouTube and loves watching videos online, then YouTube Kids is a salvation for you.
