Amazon Alexa Review: Voice-Control Smart Home System

Review Standarts
Our main goal is to provide full and useful app reviews. Our authors strictly follow the rules: minimum 15 hours of the real app usage experience or gameplay, test on main Android and iOS versions, test on phones and tablets.

Amazon Alexa is a voice-control system working with a lot of compatible devices. Download Amazon Alexa and manage all of your devices with just your voice.

Functionality — 4/5

The app allows you to control your Echo smart speakers and other compatible devices, using only your voice to do simple actions around your house. For example, you can tell Amazon Alexa to turn on your lights, play your favorite music and so on. Moreover, those actions can be fully automated, and almost every update brings more and more different functions. However, not all of them may work as intended.

Design — 4.5/5

The design of the app is nearly perfect. You can easily adjust your settings and create shortcuts for the actions you perform every day. And it gives you constant feedback because Amazon Alexa adapts to your voice and recommends you new features. The app works very smoothly and allows you to customize it. In general, it is rather convenient to use on any device.

Usability — 4/5

Amazon Alexa is pretty useful to manage your smart devices, and it gets even more useful with every update featuring new skills and options. One of the most prominent features of the app is its ability to respond without special activation. You don’t need to push a button or say some long phrase. To address the app, you just need to say the trigger word like «Alexa» or «Amazon» followed by what you want it to do.

Still, your phrasing matters, and sometimes you just have to repeat your command several times for Amazon Alexa to get it right. But once you get used to it, the app starts to feel very responsive and much more natural than most of the competitors’ apps. That means you don’t have to constantly use your phone to play music or dim your lights, instead you just say your wishes out loud, and Alexa fulfills them.

Cross-platform use — 4/5

Amazon Alexa is a mobile app, and it has versions for iOS and Android. It doesn’t support any other platforms though, but the app isn’t meant for that anyway.

In-app purchases

The app is free, without in-app purchases. Still, you have to buy additional devices like Amazon Echo separately.

The Bottom Line

Reviewing Amazon Alexa is not a difficult task since it’s just one of the best apps in its niche. Despite having some minor problems that await fixing in next updates, the app is very useful and responsive.
