Instagram for Kids Got Canceled
Instagram had to halt its recent invention; Instagram for Kids app. Let’s see what caused that sudden measure.
The #1 photo-sharing platform puts the app designed specifically for kids on pause. This radical measure was caused by a few factors.
First, we can name the public outcry. Recently, 40 attorney generals addressed the platform and Zuckerberg personally to remove the app from public access. The statement made by the group said this: "Use of social media can be detrimental to the health and well-being of children, who are not equipped to navigate the challenges of having a social media account..."
Besides, the AGs mentioned that Facebook has proved in the past that it lacks competence for providing a safe environment for both children and adults. For instance, the Messenger Kids — a “safe” FB extension for younger users — has also been branded as a potentially dangerous app for teens and children.
Second, various commentators note that Instagram provides an unhealthy experience to younger, and therefore, more gullible minds. For example, a report brought by the Wall Street Journal, shows that 32% of teen girls feel upset about their physique because of the “beauty” images delivered by Insta-culture.
Together with that, Facebook’s staff strongly believe it was a good initiative. The concept of the app is meant to shield young users from the hidden dangers of the Internet. Besides, it was ads-free. At the same time, apps and social networks meant exclusively for children aren’t safe from the grown-up intruders, pretending to be their peers. And the best call in this scenario is that they’d be relatively harmless trolls.
While Instagram for Kids is getting shelved, the platform promises to deliver more parental control features in the future. Do you think that cancelation of the app was a good idea? Do you allow your children to use Instagram? Let us know in the comments!
