Verizon Devices Will Have Google Messages by Default
All Apple devices have iMessage preinstalled. While the company hasn't announced any plans to port this app to Android yet, Verizon Communications will have its own default messenger. This major US telecommunications company reportedly makes Google Messages the default app for all Android smartphones and tablets they sell. These plans will take effect from 2022.
The features of Google Messages and iMessage are similar in many ways and use Rich Communication Services, which is a modern alternative to SMS. The introduction of the messenger on all devices with the Android operating system will be a step towards maintaining competition with the Apple brand. According to statistics, the number of active Android users is greater than that of iOS. Previously, companies such as T-Mobile (in March) and AT&T (in June) also announced that they would make Google Messages the default app on their devices.
Verizon also informed its customers that it would continue to support the branded Verizon Message+ along with the new messenger. While their app is not the most user-friendly and has an awkward interface, it unites all Verizon devices. It is assumed that the company, together with Google, will come up with a way to combine both messengers, databases, and synchronize forwarded messages. It also reported that Google has no plans to port its app to the iPhone.
The use of RCS opens up ample opportunities for users to exchange messages, videos, photos, and other information via Wi-Fi or mobile Internet. Traditional SMS sent over 3G networks are gradually becoming a thing of the past. According to experts, in June 2021, the number of active RCS users was more than 470 million worldwide. More active use of this technology in the US will significantly increase this figure.
